Crying the News: A History of America’s Newsboys – a discussion with the author, Professor Vincent DiGirolamo.

What do we really know about the children who hawked and delivered newspapers in American cities and towns? Who were they? What were their lives like? And how important was their work to the development of a free press, the survival of poor families, and the shaping of their own attitudes, values, and beliefs?

Newsboys have long intrigued Americans as a symbol of struggle and success. This is the first book to place the occupational group at the center of American history, analyzing their role as economic actors and cultural symbols over a century of war and peace, prosperity and depression.

While the book focus mainly on boys, it also examines the role of girls and grown-ups, black people and white people, immigrants, natives, and the elderly.

After the discussion, Professor DiGirolamo will answer questions and sign books.
