Open seven days a week, Waterside Plaza Swim & Health Club is an ideal place to work out, offering fully-equipped cardio and weight rooms, saunas, an indoor heated pool and certified personal trainers and instructors.
We recently profiled one of our exceptional trainers (Stu Lupoten), and this time we’d like you to introduce you to our stellar swim and group fitness instructor, David Cabrol!
An 18 year veteran of Waterside Swim & Health Club, with 26 years of teaching experience, David Cabrol has helped generations of Watersiders learn how to swim. He has taught people from every continent, and these days, it is not uncommon for former students to bring their children to him for lessons.
David has the following certifications: CPR/ First Aid/AED for the Professional Rescuer,
Lifeguard, Oxygen Administration, Lifeguard Management, Sports Safety Training, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructing, SPARK training for early childhood development.
Do you have a favorite teaching experience? I enjoy working with people, especially those with special needs, physical disabilities or poor motor skills. It is so gratifying when I get them to do things everyone else thought was impossible. It’s the same when I teach a child or an adult who is terrified of the water how to swim. Learning how to swim connects people. Years ago, one of my British International School students nicknamed me “Uncle David.” It stuck and to this day that is what some of the British International School kids call me. Another one of my students returned to her native South Korea and coached their national swim team!
Where are you from? I was born and raised in New York City, but my family is from Haiti. At age 9, they sent me and my siblings to live in Haiti, for six years, to gain a better understanding of Haitian culture and an appreciation for life in the United States. I lived in a dormitory and attended the United Nations School. My living conditions were much better than those of most Haitians, but it was so hard. I saw real poverty. The experience forever changed me. I am truly grateful for the life I have now.
How did you get into the fitness industry? I was working as a lifeguard, and always giving swimming tips to people, when I was asked to teach. It just came so naturally, I got certified right away. I love my job. Every day I am making a difference
