Photos: Swingin’ at Waterside – with the George Gee Swing Orchestra

What a swingin’ good time we had here with the George Gee Swing Orchestra!

While we usually hold the events on our plaza, this time the rain kept us indoors – but not from enjoying the great music!

Waterside is home to The British International School of New York and they welcomed us to their Dining Hall for the show.

We were so thrilled to have Kimya Dawson here at Waterside!

And so were her fans – some traveled over 100 miles to see the show!

Here are a few photos from the event:

One of our favorite Instagram posts was from Deanna Young (deannagyoung), who wrote:

“I probably heard Kimya Dawson’s My Cute Sweet Fiend Princess when I was 13 or 14. I can’t remember my exact age but I remember the shyness and sadness and strange ability to relate to songs that perfectly captured the extremes of being a kid who spends to much time in their head. More than 10 years later, my heart is full and my favorite human is filling NYC with her songs. Now to solve the rest of my daily crises..”

Thank you for joining us for this very special night.

George Gee: “Swing Has a Rhythm Sure to Make You Move”

Coming up next, as part of Waterside’s Summer Music Series, we bring you the George Gee Swing Orchestra!

We’re thrilled to have them at Waterside on July 25th – and look forward to a swingin’ good time! (Note: This event will take place rain or shine! If it rains, we have an indoor space to sway and swing in!)

George is the world’s only Chinese-American swing big bandleader, and, as he notes on his site, this provides him with a unique cross-cultural perspective and a keen interest in bridging differences “among all the people worldwide who enjoy this music and the vintage context.”

We asked George a few questions:

What’s going to happen at your Waterside show?

A lot of fun, swingin’ big band swing music!

What’s special about your band?

Our band has a love of life and love of the music.

We’re a family of top NYC jazz musicians that play weekly at Time Square’s Swing 46 Jazz & Supper Club every Tuesday.

What motivates people to dance at your shows?

We play music with a good swingin’ beat!

We also play some familiar tunes, which is helpful. Guests will recognize: “Take The A Train” (the signature tune of the Duke Ellington orchestra), “This Can’t Be Love” (from “The Boys from Syracuse”), “Jumpin’ at the Woodside” (one of the Count Basie Orchestra’s signature tunes) and “Tuxedo Junction” (a No. 1 hit for Glenn Miller & His Orchestra).

What’s your goal when you perform?

To help make the world a little bit of a better place.
